Coping with a significant loss can be particularly painful, and grief is a normal reaction to these major losses. Grief can be caused by the death of a loved one, loss of health or identity, among other experiences. While grief can be an experience unique to each individual, there are five common steps within the grief process:

  • Denial, often with the individual experiencing emotional numbness
  • Anger
  • Bargaining and thinking “what if” and “if only”
  • Depression or a feeling of emptiness
  • Acceptance of the reality of the situation
