Alcohol and Drug Misuse
Alcohol and substance misuse occurs when a person becomes dependent on substances that negatively impact their ability to function normally. Addiction is a chronic disease that may change the way the brain functions – leading to compulsive alcohol or substance misuse despite harmful consequences to the individual and others around them. Quitting without additional help can be extremely difficult, even when the individual is mentally prepared.
Treatments, including medication and behavioral therapy, are available in conjunction with tailored approaches to deal with co-occurring medical, psychiatric and social issues to give the individual the tools for sustained recovery and a life without substances.
